NEUROPSYCHOLOGICA
The
Polish Neuropsychological Society,
founded in
1991, is an institutional member of the International
Neuropsychological Society (INS). At present there are over 300
members, mostly specialists in neuropsychology. In addition to its
statutory activity, the Society has organized to date seven national
and international conferences devoted to the subject of
neuropsychological rehabilitation, and has been a co-organizer of
numerous scientific meetings, lectures, short courses, conferences, and
congresses, such as the Fourth International Congress of
Neurolinguistics (Cracow 1994), or the symposium entitled
“The discourse of science, the discourse of power, the
discourse of truth: Society as text in the thought of Richard Harvey
Brown” (Katowice 2003).
The members of the Executive
Board
are recognized experts in neuropsychology and related fields, with
numerous scientific publications and films presented at national and
international congresses devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of
brain dysfunctions. They represent a broad cross-section of Polish
academic and clinical institutions, and co-operate with a number of
organizations and institutions of similar scope and interests, such as
the Center for Cognition and Communication in New York, the Association
Internationale d’ Aphasie, and others. Many Board members are
active on the editorial boards of national and international journals
in neuropsychology and related fields: Neurologia i Neurochirurgia
Polska, Aphasiology: An International Interdisciplinary Journal,
Journal of Applied Neuropsychology, Medical Sciences Monitor, Case
Studies and Clinical Practice Review. They have been engaged in such
important initiatives as the Pan-European Program of Neurodiagnosis and
Neurorehabilitation of Patients with Head Injury, the Polish National
Program for the Preventive and Treatment of Stroke, and the
Cracow-based Foundation for Persons with Brain Dysfunctions. A group of
Board members is now working on introducing neuropsychological
assessment to forensic and administrative proceedings in Polish law.
In 2003, the Society began
publishing a new journal, Acta Neuropsychologica, one of a relatively
small number of specialized journals published in this field. The
officers of the Society are members of the Board ex officio, where they
are joined by a very distinguished international board, including such
world-renowned experts as Jason Brown, Karl Pribram, Marcel Kinsbourne,
Yvan Lebrun, Bruce Murdoch, Andrew Kertesz, Chris Code, and many
others. Acta Neuropsychologica seeks to publish important, innovative
works in neuropsychology, reflecting the eclectic and creative spirit
of Polish neuropsychology.
